Implementing and Supporting Microsoft® Windows® 98 70-098
Planning
( From CERTSITES )
Choosing the appropriate file system
FAT- file system based on a file application table, maintained by the OS, to keep track of the status of various segments of disk space used for file storage.
FAT16 - allows you to dual boot Windows 98 with another Microsoft OS.
FAT32 - enhancement of the FAT file system that supports large drives with improved disk space efficiency.
Planning a workgroup
Develop a security strategy in a Microsoft environment or a mixed Microsoft and NetWare environment such as:
User profiles:
System policies - System policies are simply changes to the registry that limit the control the user has over the user interface and operating system functionality.
User-level access control - In an NT based network, a user must have a valid user name and password within the NT domain in order to access a shared resource.
Share-level access control - A password is assigned to a shared resource and each user that wants to connect to this resource must know the password.
File and Printer Sharing - Go to Control Panel and click on Network. Click the File and Printer sharing option on the configuration tab. Check the appropriate box for file and/or printer sharing.
Installation and Configuration
Install Windows 98. Installation options include:
Configure Windows 98 server components which include:
Install and configure the network components of Windows 98 in a Microsoft environment or a mixed Microsoft and NetWare environment such as:
Install and configure network protocols in a Microsoft environment or a mixed Microsoft and NetWare environment such as:
Install and configure hardware devices in a Microsoft environment and a mixed Microsoft and NetWare environment such as:
Assign access permissions for shared folders in a Microsoft environment or a mixed Microsoft and NetWare environment such as:
Set up user environments by using user profiles and system policies.
Back up data and the registry and restore data and the registry.
Configure hard disks which the tasks include:
Disk compression - a compressed drive exists on the hard disk as a compressed volume file (CSV). A CSV is a file with read-only, hidden and system attributes.
Partitioning - creating a physical disk that functions as though it were a physically separate unit.
Enabling large disk support
Converting to FAT32 - you can easily convert to FAT32 using the Converter Wizard.
Create hardware profiles.
Integration and Interoperability
Configure a Windows 98 computer as a client computer in a network that contains a Windows NT 4.0 domain. - This requires that the Client for Microsoft Networks is installed.
Configure a Windows 98 computer as a client computer in a NetWare network - The Client for Netware networks must be installed to connect to a Netware network.
Choosing protocols on NetWare networks such as:
Configure a Windows 98 computer for remote access by using various methods in a Microsoft environment or a mixed Microsoft and NetWare environment such as:
Dial-Up Networking - component that makes it possible for users to connect to remote networks such as the Internet or a private network.
Proxy Server - server that acts as a go-between, converting information from Web servers into HTML to be delivered to a client computer.
Monitoring and Optimization
Troubleshooting
Resolving file and driver version conflicts by using the following:
Version Conflict Manager - manages version conflicts by keeping the existing file and storing the older file provided by Setup in the %WinDir%\VCM folder.
Microsoft System Information utility - displays system information, such as hardware resources, devices installed, and the corresponding device drivers.
- Resolve resource access problems in a Microsoft environment or a mixed Microsoft and NetWare environment.
- Resolve printing problems in a Microsoft environment or a mixed Microsoft and NetWare environment.
- Resolve file system problems.
